150x100 cm ~ Peinture, Huile
Claudia from Agence Hamilton visited my home atelier and told me my paintings were too small for their office walls, so I was given the challenge of fulfilling 3 large 150 x 100cm oil paintings and four 60 x 80 cm in 2 months all views of the city of Béziers
I had just completed my last commission and had a relatively free diary so took up the gauntlet thrown to me.
I work well to a deadline I think a time limit makes one focus, I had hoped more would be painted sur le motif, but the wet spring weather didn't assist. So most paintings were completed in the studio.
The linen used is antique linen, found in the attic of an old house in our village of Autignac, triple primed with gesso and stapled to the wall in my studio to work on, then stretched on wooden stretchers when dry
The Cathedrale of St Nazaire, Béziers is iconic and generally photographed from below by l'Orb river
I chose this angle for it's boldness and the view through to Place de la Revolution and on the left hand edge is a suggestion of Trencavel the knight of Béziers whose statue has frecently been erected by the cathedrale
Is it an accurate representation? No! it is an impression
